TAIWAN'S policy towards the mainland is likely to be adjusted following yesterday's elections.
Calls for a national conference to resolve tensions with China are growing.
The victory of President Lee will allow him to dominate the design of future negotiations with China, according to Professor Chang Wu-yeh of the Mainland Research Institute at Tamkang University.
The higher the percentage of votes the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party got, the greater the calls would be for breaking away, he added.
Professor Chang said China's military exercises were strong signals to Taiwan that it should come up with concrete measures to improve cross-strait relations.
He said that a top issue which needed to be resolved at a national affairs conference would be how to end the tensions.
Cross-strait economic and trade relations as well as direct links should also be addressed, he said.
