They may not have a vote today, but the views of Taiwan's primary school children will determine the future direction the island will take when they become voters at the age of 20.
Tony, a 13-year-old primary five pupil in Taipei, said he would vote for the Democratic Progressive Party's Peng Ming-min if he were a voter.
'I think Taiwan should be independent from the mainland. It'll be better because there won't be any ups and downs in the stock market and other chaos,' Tony said, referring to the impact of China's military threats.
'Taiwan does not necessarily belong to the mainland, because there have been a number of indigenous people here for a long time.
'But I don't want the mainland to attack us,' he said.
Grade six student, Lee Chun-hui, said Taiwan should become independent if it wanted to have the dignity of a state.
