Heriot-Watt was selected as the international university in Putrajaya, Malaysia's government capital, and was approved by the Ministry of Education to operate as a private higher education institution. Able to accommodate 4,000 students, the university will offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that meet the needs of the local economy.

"We want to help the economy of the countries we go into," says Professor Steve Chapman, principal and vice-chancellor. "Our petroleum engineering and actuarial finance programmes caught Malaysia's eye because it wants to grow into an Asian hub."

Heriot-Watt has prepared students for active participation in their country's economies since its foundation in 1821. It balances what students look for in a university education with what employers look for in potential hires, by collaborating with advisory boards composed of industry experts who help Heriot-Watt ensure the relevance of its programmes.

The university especially encourages working students to benefit from its distance learning MBA programme.

Conducted through Heriot-Watt's Edinburgh Business School, the university's MBA programme offers students the choice of studying in English, Chinese, Russian, Arabic or Spanish. Students may self-study, join classes at one of the school's contracted international centres, or study at one of Heriot-Watt's campuses. Students can study single subject courses to get skills and expertise relevant to their jobs, or take combinations of courses to become eligible for university degrees.
