THE WINNERS INCUMBENT Emily Lau Wai-hing was the most popular legislator elected in geographical constituencies, securing more than 39,000 votes and assuming the mantle worn by Martin Lee Chu-ming in 1991.
Miss Lau swept to victory with 39,265 votes, beating opponent Lau Kong-wah by a comfortable margin of 11,424 votes in the New Territories East constituency.
She also surpassed Mr Lee, running in Hong Kong Island East, by 1,806 votes.
But she had 1,384 fewer votes than the 40,649 cast for retired civil servant Elizabeth Wong Chien Chi-lien in the Community, Social and Personal Services functional constituency.
Miss Lau said her victory was an honour bestowed by her constituents and pledged to work hard in the next four years.
'The results shows that my constituents are active and supportive. They are looking for someone outspoken, articulate and with a clear stand to represent them,' she added.
She insisted China should not kick out democratically elected legislators in 1997.
