Oppo announces AR glasses and IoT products

Oppo is investing big in 5G and AR, which are part of its planned US$ 7.1 billion R&D investment over the next three years

Oppo will soon have its very own augmented reality glasses. The Chinese smartphone company unveiled the smart glasses on Tuesday, saying they’ll be equipped with 3D reconstruction technology, surround sound and other features.

Oppo didn’t give a release date for the glasses, but it also announced other new products at its inaugural Oppo Inno Day. The company said its first smartwatch will be released in the first quarter of 2020, and it announced a 5G CPE connection Hub. The hub will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 modem and allow other devices like IoT products to connect to 5G.

Oppo has been working on AR and 5G for a while. In February, the smartphone brand demonstrated a 5G phone call using AR between Singapore and Australia in collaboration with Ericsson and two of the countries’ telecom companies. The call allowed for instant on-screen annotations about the companies' 5G sites, Ericsson said.

Oppo founder and CEO Chen Mingyong said that the company plans to invest a whopping 50 billion yuan (US$7.1 billion) in R&D over the next three years. In addition to 5G and AR, research will focus on IoT and AI, the company said.
